The Alkaline Diet: What Have Jennifer Aniston and Robbie Williams Got In Common?

These two A-listers follow the "alkaline diet". Bet you didn't know that!
I received an email from one of my boot camp members asking about the "alkaline diet" that she read about in The Daily Mail today. Apparently all the celebrities are following it and she wondered what I thought about it.
The alkaline diet has actually been around for years and I have no idea why it's taken so long for everyone to hear about it. I guess it's not been 'sexy' enough for the media, until now.
In very simple terms, here's a run down.
We've got acid and alkaline. If your body becomes overly acidic you will feel like crap, have no energy, put on weight and be known as "sicknote" at work. Worse than this you'll actually become very ill and end up in hospital.
Disease thrives in an acidic environment. Acid is an invite to bacteria and his partner's in crime, yeast and fungus. Believe me you do not want fungus growing in your body!
Stress plays a huge role in becoming acidic. This stress can be emotional or physical, so whether it's working too late, not getting enough sleep, eating junk food, drinking booze or having a fall out with your partner it all adds up and causes your body to go into meltdown.
Well, not literally meltdown, but if you keep this sort of lifestyle up your body will show signs of cracking sooner or later.
So what can we do?
The article in the Mail says to eat more alkaline foods (green vegetables, fruits, herbal teas) which is spot on. What it neglects to mention is that if you were to do the alkaline diet properly, like Dr Young suggests, you should follow a raw food diet only.
I really believe in Dr Young's alkaline diet, but unfortunately I'm not down with the raw food approach. As you know, I follow the Paleo diet at least 80% of the time and this has a good balance of acid vs alkaline foods, which helps keep my body in check.
Although you don't need to follow a specific diet to reduce the acidity of your body. You can do any of the following:
1. Move to Jamaica, man (in my best Jamaican accent... man!)
2. Cut back on yellow foods (pasta, cereals, rice, white potatoes, etc)
3. Eat plenty of green veg (spinach, broccoli, kale, sprouts, etc)
4. Exercise
5. Get to bed early (nobody looks good on 4 hours sleep)
6. Pick up some alkalising salts
7. Quit your job and become a ski-instructor in the alps
Number 6 is probably the easiest way to reduce the acidity of your body without having to eat raw foods and it's one that has helped me massively. When I started taking alkaling salts my energy shot up, my hayfever was cured and I just felt much healthier.
You can buy alkalising salts anywhere on the net, but I get mine from a nutrition wizard called Phil Richards.
BUT WAIT
Don't buy this supplement or any other supplement unless you can switch on your "OCD mode", that means taking them religiously everyday for at least a couple of weeks.
You may have read this already in the nutrition section, but I'll repeat it just in case.
Some people take supplements on an ad-hoc basis and wonder why they don't feel any different. In my opinion you've got to give them at least a couple of weeks for them to make their mark. If you're not prepared to go "OCD" don't bother and save your money.
If you've got a question about these alkaling salts just give me a shout.
